This mask is believed to be carved by
Gabriel Akpabio who according to Nicklin and
Salmons in their article on Cross River Art
Styles AA-XVll,Vol1, worked in the Ogoja area
and died in the Biafran War (1967-1970).
They included a photo of a similar mask in
the National Museum in Jos. (see small
photo below) His style is quite modern to
what we normally think of as collectible
African art but it is well carved, well used and
no doubt authentic African Art. I am not that
crazy about the style and colors but it is not
often we get to know the names of these
artists and having that connection means
something and I love the piece for that.
